New Year, Fresh Start – Editor in Chief Message of January 2016

It feels as if 2015 was yesterday.

2015 was filled with amazing entertainment in gaming, television, movies, music, anime, and cartoons. Each and every one of us here in the company have enjoyed 2015, so stay tuned for our top ten and what we expect to see this year for 2016.

It’s going to be a slow start for gaming, but we do have highly anticipated remakes such as Amplitude, Resident Evil Zero HD, and A Boy and his Blob. We also save the world again, although in LEGO form in Lego Marvel’s The Avengers and two worlds collide for one fun adventure in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

Star Wars-ed out yet? Not to worry. In movies, we have third installment of the Kung Fu Panda series with Kung Fu Panda 3, strap in for a story of revenge in The Revenant, and see how six survive an attack in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi.

Mid-season premieres start off with DC’s Arrow and DC’s The Flash this month. With the return of those two shows, expect the premiere of Legends of Tomorrow! We also have the return of Marvel’s Agent Carter and the most anticipated return of Fox’s highly praised show, The X-Files.

We are already preparing ourselves our first press coverage event on Katsucon 2016 next month at National Harbor and we are improving our website. We appreciate your patience and thank you for your support.

Upcoming January Anime

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!! It’s the start of a new year filled with many possibilities and adventures. Let’s see what the new year will have in store for us in the world of anime.

Prince of Stride Alternative (TV)

“Stride,” is an extreme sport that involves six people on one team who run relay races through towns. Hōnan Academy and other schools compete to win eastern Japan’s top Stride competition, “End of Summer.” However, Hōnan’s team has shut down. First year high school students Takeru Fujiwara and Nana Sakurai attempt to restart the club, but they must recruit six members for the team. They ask Riku Yagami to join, but he turns them down by saying that Stride is the one thing he doesn’t want to do.

Haruchika – Haruta & Chika (TV)

Haruta and Chika are members of their high school wind instrument club that is on the verge of being shut down. The two are childhood friends, and they spend their days practicing hard while also trying to recruit new members. When a certain incident happens within their school, they work together to solve it.

Sushi Police (TV)

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games around the corner, there’s also a worldwide sushi boom. In order to deal with all the bastardized sushi out there, the Japanese Government’s urgent response is to team up with other ruling powers around the world to establish the WFCO (World Food-culture Conservation Organization) to protect and promote authentic local cuisine. And so the World Food-Culture Conservation Organization (WFCO), deploys its 9th Division to oversee Japanese cuisine abroad. The 9th Division, a.k.a. Sushi Police, is notorious for their aggressive conduct and they hassle anyone serving unauthentic Japanese food in the U.S., Russia, France, China, etc. They will resort to any means necessary to eliminate bad sushi. Soon they are despised by restaurant proprietors around the world.

Myriad Colors Phantom World (TV)

In the near future, in a world born of human imagination, what humans would call ghosts or monsters appear, and they come to be called “phantoms.” Haruhiko Ichijō, is a first year at Hosea Academy along with his upperclassman Mai Kawakami, who fights phantoms with the ability “Spirit of Five Elements,” Reina Izumi, who has the ability “Phantom Eater,” and Koito Minase, who fights phantoms in solitude. They experience the ups and downs of high school life before a certain incident leads them to the truth of this world.

Assassination Classroom (TV 2)

Class 3E is about to begin their second semester. And while some things have changed, the class assignment is still the same: kill their teacher before the end of the year. Easier said than done since Koro Sensei’s made it clear he won’t go down without a fight.

Active Raid: Kidō Kyōshūshitsu Dai-Hakkei (TV)

Set in a part of Tokyo that has descended into a quagmire, the story follows Unit 8 of the 5th Special Public Security Section’s 3rd Mobile Assault Division popularly called “The Eighth”  who don powered armor “Willware” exoskeletons to counter the rise in crime. Assistant inspector Asami Kazari is assigned to The Eighth with the task of assessing the unit’s status and reporting it to her superiors. But her true goal is to rehabilitate this sloppy, haphazard, justice-less group.


Kokonotsu “Coconuts” Shikada dreams of becoming a famous manga artist. The only problem is that he’s terrible. His real talent is selling the complex and delicious snacks in his father’s “dagashi” shop. He never thought much about the family business until the trendy, eccentric Hotaru showed up. As a lover of “dagashi,” she can’t let his talent go to waste and decides she won’t stop ‘til she’s sold him on sweets.


Satoru Fujinuma is a struggling manga artist who has the ability to turn back time and prevent deaths. When his mother is killed he turns back time to solve the mystery, but ends up back in elementary school, just before the disappearance of his classmate Kayo.

Girls aim for the Wilderness: Girls beyond the youth KOYA (TV)

Buntarō is a student who wants to be something, but doesn’t know what. One day his female classmate Sayuki announces she is working on a bishōjo (pretty girl) game. Sayuki scouted him because he wrote a good script for drama club, but Buntarō doesn’t know anything about bishōjo games.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation (TV)

Itsuki Tachibana is a student of Seiga Academy, a co-ed boarding high school with excellent reputation, located in a suburb outside the city center. On a day of second semester, he was summoned by Rina Izumi, the most esteemed and praised chairperson, to the student council room, without knowing what awaits him.

Ojisan to Marshmallow (TV)

Kusaka is an older man who loves marshmallows, and Wakabayashi is an OL (office lady) who loves Kusaka. Their relationship unfolds at their office.

Norn Nonet (TV)

The era where great powers of the world have all ventured overseas. Revolution and liberalism spread all over the world. Right when souls and earth are ill, a glowing sphere appeared in the sky, and removed the borders of the world. Three girls and nine young men depart together with a flying ship.

Divine Gate (TV)

No one knows when, where, or how “the gate” was created; furthermore, no one can see, touch, or access it. However, when “the gate” is opened, realms of mortals, fairies, and daemons collide, destroying world orders. While leaders of three realms try to restore orders, some talented and capable mortals begin to approach the gate, now known as “Divine Gate.” Yet no one has reached the Gate and returned, however.

Sekkō Boys (TV)

A unit of four stone figures,  the military saint and group leader Saint Giorgio, history’s original celebrity Medici, the strikingly handsome and multi-talented Hermes, and the god of war Mars who is earnest about love who become idiosyncratic idols. The story depicts their efforts to make it in the entertainment world with their female manager Miki Ishimoto, who just graduated from college.

Oshiete! Galko-chan (TV)

Galko, Otako, Ojō are a “gal,” an otaku, and a proper lady, respectively, and are also good friends. The three high school girls with different perspectives discuss the kinds of secrets you can’t tell boys.

Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage (TV)

A comet falling will bring about a great calamity, and in order to choose a child fated by the falling comet, the family of the “Reiken” clan with a long storied history is once again resuming its entrance examination process to find disciples. The protagonist Lu Wang, who possesses a special soul that is only available once in a thousand years, decides to take the exam, and he starts down the path toward becoming an exceptional sage.

Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū (TV)

The year was 1970s. Fascinated by the performance of rakugo master Yakumo the 8th at a philanthropic show in a prison, delinquent Kyōji visited Yakumo immediately after serving his term, begging Yakumo to take him in as an apprentice. To his surprise, master Yakumo agreed without much hesitation, yet things progressed not quite as Kyōji expected.

Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn (TV)

In an age when large-scale natural disasters frequently happen all over the world, when cyborgs and autonomous robots are beginning to appear on the market in technologically advanced nations, and major world powers compete for technology and resources, the divide between rich and poor grows and the future for the poor looks bleak. In this transitional stage, everyone wanders around in a self-indulgent daze and the way out isn’t clear… This is the story of how two cybernetically enhanced girls meet.

“I think it’s about time I talked about Kiss-Shot-Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. I believe it’s something I have to do. I met her in the spring break between my second and third years of high school. That meeting had such impact and was also quite devastating.”

Durarara!! ×2 The Third Arc (TV)

Ikebukuro is engulfed in a spiral of confusion. A group of individuals, each carrying the weight of their own past, gathers at Shinra’s apartment, while in the city the Dollars, Yellow Scarves, and Saika contend for power. However, the situation takes a turn that no one could expect when Celty’s head is revealed to the public, as this tale approaches its conclusion.


Returning to Japan after having been away for 10 years, Azuma Akira finds himself attacked and captured by armed strangers. What saves him is his childhood friend, the girl Ōgon Asabuki, and the Bubuki that had become her right hand.

Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (TV 2)

The second season of the Gate anime. In August of 20XX, a portal to a parallel world, known as the “Gate,” suddenly appeared in Ginza, Tokyo. Monsters and troops poured out of the portal, turning the shopping district into a bloody inferno.

Luck & Logic (TV)

In L.C. 922, people faced a sudden crisis. In Tetra Heaven, the land of legend, a hundred years of war had come to a close. The gods who lost the war searched for a new place to live, and found it in Septpia, the human world, which they proceeded to attack. The Logicalists attached to ALCA, a special police agency whose duty it was to protect cities from assaults by foreigners (angels), were compelled to act in defense of cities, whether they wished to or not. Depending on their ability, Logicalists could initiate trance with goddesses from the other world, and stand a fighting chance on the battlefield. A civilian named Yoshichika Tsurugi, who lacked “Logic” and lived happily with his family, was caught up in an attack, and took shelter along with many people. He meets a beautiful goddess named Athena. In her hands, she had the “Logic” that Yoshichika lacked. Now both Yoshichika and Athena head to their destiny.

Fairy Tail Zero (TV)

Many years ago, Mavis Vermilion was a servant on Sirius Island, mistreated by a guild master and his daughter, Zera. But Mavis stayed positive, because her mother once told her that fairies never visit people who cry about their problems. When the guild came under attack, Mavis pulled Zera from the wreckage into the forest. Seven years went by, and the powerful wizards Warrod Sequen, Precht, and Yuri Dreyer arrived on the island, seeking a powerful jade gemstone. This journey would change the course of magical history.

KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm (movie)

The Prism Show unit Over The Rainbow succeeds in its debut. Aiming to become like the boy band, more students enroll in Edel Rose. Hiro and the others begin practice for the Prism King Cup, an event that is held once every four years. However, a rival called “Schwarz Rose” appears… The boys fight to become Prism King, the one who can make girls’ hearts throb the most.

Schwarzesmarken (TV)

Schwarzesmarken is a spin-off of the Muv-Luv Alternative series, but the events takes place in 1983. The East German Army 666th TSF Squadron “Schwarzesmarken” (Black Marks) are a special-forces unit tasked with assaulting BETA forces through unconventional tactics; specifically, they target Lux and Magnus Lux to deny the BETA the advantage of ranged firepower. Their orders are given the topmost priority, such that it is common practice for the 666th to ignore allied distress calls that will result in deviation from their original mission, even if only for a short moment. The 666th Squadron mostly operates MiG-21s, with their squadron commander Irisdena Bernhard piloting an MiG-21PF.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (TV)

When Haruhito awakens, he’s in the dark. He doesn’t know where he is, why is he here, and where he came from. Around him there are several men and women who have the same circumstances. Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R (TV)

Komugi Yoshida is a somewhat clumsy second-year middle-school student whose strong point is her spiritedness. She performs as an idol like Kokona Saionji (her classmate and close friend) and Tsukasa Kisaragi (an idol who dresses in male clothing). However, unlike Kokona whose popularity is skyrocketing and Tsukasa with her charisma in male attire, Komugi’s only gigs are low-end ones like those at the local shopping district. Still, Komugi has her “dream” as she lives her dual lives as a idol and a middle school girl. One day, a mysterious injured creature named Usa-P appears before Komugi and asks if she wants to be a Legendary Girl who can use magical powers. She reluctantly becomes Magical Nurse and fights waves of masked figures. Meanwhile, a Magical Maid and a Magical Sister also show up.

Yami Shibai (TV 3)

Third season of Yami Shibai is a picture-story style of animation whose motif is surrounded and based off rumors and urban legends throughout the history of Japan.

Rainbow Days (TV)

Natsuki, Tomoya, Keiichi, and Tsuyoshi are high school students and close friends: The four boys have no club activities, and they hurry through their studies so they can spend their days having fun. Their main topic of interest: love. Natsuki has an unrequited crush on Anna, a girl from another class, and his friends keep meddling in their relationship.

Ōya-san wa Shishunki! (TV)

The protagonist is living alone for the first time after finding employment. At his tiny, no-bath apartment he finds a landlord who looks like a little sister. She does the cooking and housework, so sometimes she seems like a grandmother, but she also enjoys a normal middle school life with her friends.

Dimension W (TV)

Humanity harnessed a new inexhaustible energy from inventions called “Coils” in 2051. In 2072, a skilled recovery specialist named Kyōma Mabuchi encounters a mysterious, beautiful woman right in the middle of a certain job. It is a fateful encounter that opens the door to the new dimension “W.”

Ketsuekigata-kun! (TV 4)

The anime adapted from the manga remake version of the Korean webtoon “A Simple Thinking about Blood types” involving the faceless and nameless characters of four different blood types to discuss about popular anthropomorphized blood types (the stereotypes about the blood types) in Japan and Korea.

Snow White with the Red Hair (TV 2)

Second season of Akagami no Shirayuki-hime. Although her name means “snow white,” Shirayuki is a cheerful, red-haired girl living in the country of Tanbarun who works diligently as an apothecary at her herbal shop. Her life changes drastically when she is noticed by the silly prince of Tanbarun, Prince Raji, who then tries to force her to become his concubine. Unwilling to give up her freedom, Shirayuki cuts her long red hair and escapes into the forest, where she is rescued from Raji by Zen Wistalia, the second prince of a neighboring country, and his two aides. Hoping to repay her debt to the trio someday, Shirayuki sets her sights on pursuing a career as the court herbalist in Zen’s country, Clarines.

Mahō Shōjo Nante Mō Ii Desu Kara. (TV)

Yuzuka Hanami is a young girl who has few friends but who can do anything. One day, Yuzuka gets accosted by a strange creature named Miton who is digging through a trash dump. Miton tells Yuzuka, “you have the makings of a magical girl” and seems extremely suspicious. When Yuzuka is suddenly transformed into a magical girl, she’s wearing a bathing suit.

Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle (TV)

Lux is a former prince of an empire named Arcadia that was overthrown via a rebellion five years earlier. Lux accidentally trespasses in a female dormitory’s bathing area, sees the kingdom’s new princess Lisesharte naked, and incurs her wrath. Lisesharte then challenges Lux to a Drag-Ride duel. Drag-Rides are ancient armored mechanical weapons that have been excavated from ruins all around the world. Lux used to be called the strongest Drag-Knight, but now he’s known as the “undefeated weakest” Drag-Knight because he will absolutely not attack in battle. After his duel with Lisesharte, Lux ends up attending the female-only academy that trains royals to be Drag-Knights.

Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm (TV)

In a world where flying is as simple as riding a bicycle, there is a popular sport called “Flying Circus” (dogfight race). The protagonist who once hoped for a future in this sport suffered a setback due to an overwhelming defeat, and withdrew from the sport for this and some other reason. However, he met the transfer student Asuka Kurashina, and in teaching her to fly the skies, the old passion returned. He takes part in the Flying Circus again.

Teekyū (TV 7)

Seventh season of the Teekyuu series. Teekyuu is based on a sports comedy manga of the same name featuring four high school girls who belong to a tennis club.

KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! (TV)

Kazuma Satō is a hikikomori (shut-in) die-hard fan of games, anime and manga. A traffic accident brings his disappointingly brief life to an end, or it should have, but he wakes up and sees a beautiful girl who introduces herself as a goddess. She asks him if he’d like to go to another world but he can only bring one thing with him. Kazumi chooses to bring the goddess. With that, he is transported to another world and his great adventure subjugating the demon king begins, but first the hard work of finding food, clothing, and shelter begins. Kazuma wants to live in peace, but the goddess raises one problem after another, and then the demon king’s army has its eyes set on him.

Ajin (TV)

17 years ago, immortals first appeared on the battlefields of Africa. Later, rare, unknown new immortal lifeforms began appearing among humans, and they became known as “Ajin” (demi-humans). Just before summer vacation, a Japanese high school student is instantly killed in a traffic accident on his way home from school. However, he is revived, and a price is placed on his head. Thus begins a boy’s life on the run from all of humankind.

Sinbad: Mahō no Lamp to Ugoku Shima (movie)

Sinbad and his friends run afoul of a storm while riding on the ship Bahal. Ali sights an island, which the ship heads toward to make repairs. Sinbad and Sana board a dinghy and land on the island. Sana sees a vision of a magical lamp, and Sinbad and the others set out to find it.

Persona 3 the Movie #4 Winter of Rebirth (movie)

To know death, to gaze at death, to face death. Makoto and his allies have grown through the many meetings and partings they have experienced. Their fight might not be for the sake of the world, but for themselves. Even so, they have continued to fight, believing that there are peaceful days waiting at the end of the battle. However, a boy says that destruction is the fate that humanity must shoulder. The boy they believed to be their friend tells them the truth of the situation without an emotion on his face. The season changes to winter. Makoto makes a decision in order to greet the spring that is waiting beyond…

Queen’s Blade: Grimoire (OAV)

After the wandering warrior Leina’s championship has ended, the royal court’s magician Alicia uses black magic and opens a doorway to another dimension. From that door, a rabbit lures Alicia into another dimension called Melfairland. Melfairland is holding a tournament of its own to award out a Queen’s Blade, and Alicia enters the tournament in order to find a way to return to her own world.
