Celebrating Ten Years of Skyrim by Reflecting on the Past

It’s the 10th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim! Instead of wondering what platform I’ll be able to play the game on next, let me take some time to share a few moments of my life connected by the thread called Skyrim.

Introduction to The Elder Scrolls (TES)

My first introduction to The Elder Scrolls series was through some of my classmates in my art school’s spring semester sculpture class. It was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion release day or 4.20.2006. We had just turned in a major assignment and several students wanted to skip the rest of the day’s classes to go home and play. It made me curious to know what the excitement was about. Although I was out of the loop at the time, I would be ready five years later.

Skyrim Release Day

Release day, 11.11.2011, was two days before my birthday. It was a present I asked from my father, who picked it up at the GameStop where my Beloved-to-be worked at the time. (It’s a good story for another time.) Eager to play the game that Friday, after a long day of classes and fun with friends, I dropped everything and settled on the couch in my living room. I booted the game, installed the updates…and fell asleep.

I woke up Saturday morning with the controller in my hands. What did I do? I started Skyrim of course! I ended up glued to my console all day because it was the most fun I had experienced in a while. Skyrim would have been my first Platinum playthrough if it weren’t for that first DLC.

A Game for Community

Skyrim was one of those games at the time that was not only fun to play, but it was also fun to watch. I watched my friends play. I watched my cousin play after she took interest in the game. I realized that I, the solitary gamer, found enjoyment in a gaming experience that I didn’t control. The soundtrack, environments, visuals, and experiences available in the game were enthralling to me. I watched others play as much as I played.

The Spiral

I purchased multiple versions of Skyrim. I picked up the Game of the Year edition of Oblivion thanks to my experiences with Skyrim. I downloaded and started Morrowind on Steam thanks to my experience with Oblivion. Now, I am a fangirl with Elder Scrolls Online accounts for multiple platforms and volumes of lore on my bookshelf.

Looking Forward

Skyrim and TES series opened my eyes and heart to western role-playing games. I was once a fan of only Japanese role-playing games, but now I have love and respect for both. I have learned to play, enjoy, and critique both.

So, I thank Skyrim for changing my playstyle and reforming my genre prejudice. Here’s to ten years of Skyrim!

Now, where is TES VI?

Macro purchase for Microsoft

http://news.microsoft.com

One of the biggest deals in gaming has officially happened. Microsoft now owns Bethesda through their Zenimax purchase. This means game series like Fallout, Doom, and The Elder Scrolls are now part of the Microsoft family.

It remains unclear what this means for the future of Bethesda, it could mean more Xbox exclusives, more support for bigger and quicker releases with more resources. However, this does most likely mean good news for Game Pass owners as Bethesda games will most likely hit the Game Pass service soon.

No matter how people may feel about the purchase, here’s hoping that the purchase does lead to some exciting and positive news for Bethesda going forward.

Farming eSports

There is a new contender in the eSports arena, as GIANTS software announced they would be hosting a second season of their Farming Simulator Championship within it’s own league. According to their website, there will be ten tournaments held in Europe. The competition follows these rules, “…each team has a maximum of 8 minutes to press 20 bales of straw and load them onto a bale cart in the middle of the field. The team that has loaded the 20 bales in the shortest time wins.” outlined in their May 25th, 2018 announcement for their first tournament.

While this game may not reflect the mainstream of gaming, it does demonstrate the power of community. This game found support from its fans to build and promote a series that they enjoy. This is just more proof that with the support of a community, any game has the chance to expand; and with the popularity of eSports, any franchise has the opportunity to be celebrated with their own league. With eSports gaining more sponsors and traction as it goes, we may see a rise in less traditional competitive games.

Vengeance Realized

God of War picks up right were the last one left off; there is no time to breathe as you ride upon the shoulders of Gaia and her titian army while marching towards the base of Olympus. Zeus and his brothers are in disarray, not fully understanding the depth of the danger they are in, or the magnitude of the monster Zeus had created.   “The hands of Death could not defeat him, the sisters of Fate could not hold him, he will have his revenge!”

And he meant every word. Continue reading

Mighty Morphing Batman: A Batman Ninja Review

Trailers for Batman Ninja had started spreading early 2018 for the movie produced by Warner Bros. studio. Kazuki Nakashima and Takashi Okazaki were contacted for the story and character design respectively.*  With each having success in previous outings and making landmark pieces in anime, it seemed like a great experience waiting to happen. Perhaps it is for the Japanese version, but I’m reviewing the English version since I’m interested in how well they can localize such a fusion of American pop culture and the style of anime.

Visuals

The visuals are amazing, as to be expected from Afro Samurai’s Takeshi Okazaki.  With beautiful animation and visually eye-catching designs, the colors work well against the cell shading resulting in some very good and sometimes interesting moments.  None of the designs stray far enough from their character origins to be unrecognizable, (save Jason Todd) but still remind you what time period the story is in. Bethesda Land and Beyond

The hour was Midnight. Sitting on the edge of my workspace in the first heat wave of the summer. I eagerly watched the countdown for the Bethesda’s E3 2017 conference. the screen was filled with familiar icons of the bread and butter that are their main titles for the Bethesda franchise. As well as a few avatars I did not recognize.  Soon enough the countdown dial hit zero and I was treated to a charming intro video.

We see the kids from the various people and teams that make these games possible, being asked what they thought their parents did for a living. In a plethora of cutesy and positively adorable answers (that only kids can give) we are then cut between such cuteness by their parents giving their titles and brief job descriptions. It gave a sense of real life perspective of what the game creators and developers go through to give us such endearing and beloved games. And then, the big reveal… Bethesda Land! In all its glory! Clear cut and color coated much to the happiness and excitement of many. Fans got a precise idea of what games and titles Bethesda has worked on and had in the wood works: and this is where the real conference begins.

We have a first look of sorts into Bethesda’s VR titles, DOOM and Fallout Shelter. To be honest, they couldn’t have picked better titles to segue into the VR world with than the fast-paced, beat ‘em up gore that is the Doom Guy. You now have the chance to get up and personal with the demons of hell as you can personally dish out some righteous and ,visceral violence. In the event you want to cool off from your hellish campaign, you can switch over to Fallout Shelter for some open world cool down where killing the radiated monsters are optional (no one will think less of you if you run away).

Other Notes

  • Morrowind is now included into the Elder Scrolls Online Universe, just in time for the Morrowind 15th anniversary of when the game was first made.

  • For those of you that have the PS4 and/or XBOX: ONE, both Skyrim and Fallout 4 Creation Club are now available. Taking customization to a whole new level, you can now download any new creations to these games where the option is available. Form bows and swords to the mud-crabs that are freaking everywhere. Whatever you create will appear in-game as you made it, making your already diverse world even more colorful.

  • Skyrim: Legends the card game has received some added bonuses of multiplayer matches and more loot for each game you win, added bonus the game is now available for Android and IOS. Ready to play by next month July 2017.

  • As if you couldn’t get enough of Skyrim, now you can literally play Skyrim anywhere with the partnership alongside Nintendo; Skyrim: Elder Scrolls can now be played on the Switch further giving Nintendo’s new system some much-needed diversity.

Upcoming Titles

  • Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Release date: TBA
  • The Evil Within 2 Release Date: Friday October 13TH 2017 (I see what you did there)
  • Wolfenstein 2: Release date: TBA (supposedly later this year)
  • Quake-Con: An Esports World series event where you and your team can train in the ways of Quake for the chance to win 1-million-dollar grand prize. Located in Dallas Texas where the first Quake campaign took place.

All in all, the Bethesda Conference was short, sweet and to the point. Taking advantage of the late slot and limited time to showcase the titles that are coming out soon, and just in time for the holiday season. In due time I am more than certain the updates for your favorite games and titles will arrive soon. I for one can’t wait to see what’s next in Bethesda Land.

The Coalition Put Gears of War 4 in the Spotlight With Horde Mode 3.0

2074e94c-6690-442f-a022-a62891447ef4

This weekend is the annual  PAX West convention and It’s no surprise that The Coalition will be there to promote the next installment of the critically acclaimed Gears of War franchise. And what is probably the most entertaining thing about any Gears of War game is Horde mode. It’s you against an army of enemies who are ready to take your head off. Horde mode has brought popularity to this type of gaming allowing others to reap similar benefits from their fans (Halo’s Firefight, Call of Duty’s Zombie mode). It becomes no surprise that The Coalition would give us our first look at the new and revamp Horde mode v 3.0. Check out the first look below.

Lots of new things coming for this new version. From class systems to which lets you pick your own role in the team to a Fabricator option which essentially allows you to build your own base of defense. We even a return to boss battles every 10 rounds. A mix of fresh new ideas with the classic elements that made Horde mode a hit to begin with makes this an interesting development. The question is, will it be a hit or a miss? We’ll find out on October 11th when Gears of War 4 hits the shelves.
