Soulless: Novel or Manga? Does it Really Matter?

2012-03-08_soulless_manga_final_with_text

Have you read Gail Carriger’s novel Soulless?  Did you read the manga? Yes she has a manga! For those who haven’t heard of it, I’ll run a quick summary for you.

The life of a spinster in Victorian London isn’t an easy one on the best of days, but such a life becomes infinitely more complicated when said spinster is “Soulless” – A Preternatural, bridging the gap between the natural and supernatural worlds. Miss Alexia Tarabotti has this unique distinction, and when she is assailed at a formal gathering by a Rove Vampire , an encounter that results in the death of the half-starved creature, her circumstances become exponentially more complicated indeed!!

0001-0070001-008

Now caught up in an intrigue with life or death stakes, Alexia must rely on all her talents to outmatch the forces conspiring against her, but it may be the man who has caught her eye -Lord Conall Maccon- and their budding flirtation that truly drives her to her wit’s end!

Verdict: This Victorian era manga is absolutely phenomenal, not only is the story great, but the art as well! It’s beautiful, clean, and the romance is quite steamy. Gail Carriger, you definitely get an immense amount of praise from me for this piece of work.

So check it out  if you haven’t, you won’t be disappointed!

Soulless gets a 5 out of 5

+ Amazing story

+ Outstanding artwork

+ The romance actually helps makeu the story rather than hurt it

Another Kamisama Kiss?

c024cad6ca22a617da69a9f666d7584f

I had just picked up and read the first volume of The Demon Prince of the Momochi House and so far it is a great read with great art. But I couldn’t help but notice how similar this manga is to Kamisama Kiss.

0001-012On her sixteenth birthday, orphan Himari Momochi inherits her ancestral estate that she’s never seen. Momochi House exists on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms, and Himari is meant to act as guardian between the two worlds. But on the day she moves in, she finds three handsome squatters already living in the house, and one seems to have already taken over her role.

The only difference between the two manga is that the main protagonist in The Demon Prince of the Momochi house is only human with no special powers… or so it seems, as I haven’t read very far. She’s basically just a landlady who gets herself into trouble and collects rent from three demons. Even though this manga is similar to the other,

Verdict: I would still like to give Momochi House its due for its art and hilarity. So if you don’t mind reading another Kamisama Kiss with different characters and background story, then I suggest you check out The Demon Prince of the Momochi House.

The Demon Prince of the Momochi House gets a 4 out of 5

+ Good art

+ Great humor

– A bit too reminiscent of another familiar manga (though that could change)

Volume one of The Demon Prince of the Momochi House is available now

Corpse Party Last Chapter

Image129-585x300

Corpse Party: Blood Drive -Everafter Edition- is coming to the US on the PS Vita on October 13!

Wait you haven’t heard of Corpse Party?

Then let me tell you about it. Corpse Party revolves around a group of students from Kisaragi Academy, and one of their teachers. They perform a charm called Sachiko Ever After as an attempt to cheer up one of their classmates who is transferring to another school (Is that really the only way to cheer up someone? Like really?) But suddenly a massive earthquake occurs and drags them into Heavenly Host Elementary School. What’s even worse: they appear in completely different dimensions inside the school. (They all got separated if your confused)

While searching around the school, they find the corpses of the people who were trapped before them, along with the spirits of three children who are not willing to let them live. The students of Kisaragi Academy must unravel the mystery behind Heavenly Host, and escape from there.

If you love scary games I highly recommend you play Corpse Party.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive is the final installment of the story that began with Corpse Party and continued in Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. Players take direct control of a character or party of characters and explore the ruins of Heavenly Host Elementary and other locations from a top-down 3D perspective. Along the way, they’ll be dodging or disarming traps, running from malicious entities, solving puzzles and directly interacting with the environment to trigger visual novel-style cut scenes that advance the story and lead to one of many endings, with very few of them being happy.

In this new game we can now experience Heavenly Host Elementary in 3D, have more and exciting interactions like running, disarming traps, hiding and more. Did I mention we get to fight back?!

If you pre-order now you can a bonus CD and Art book, I’m definitely getting in on that deal.

80s meets Zombies with Alpha Girl!

alphagirl4-cover-web

It’s 1984, and Judith is your typical 17-year-old girl. She chain smokes, cuts class, sells her tamps to perverts, and she just might be the last sane woman on the planet. When a third-rate cosmetics company creates a pheromone that turns women into crazed man-eaters, the world image.comics.alpha_.girl_.three_dives into chaos. Judith must break her little brother out of juvie, all the while dodging rabid women and the men who hunt them. Already a proven survivor, she picks up some interesting strays along the way and kicks some serious zombie butt! Judith is ALPHA GIRL!!

I’m a zombie fan and to be honest… I’m feeling a bit burnt out on them. Today’s zombie comics just don’t give me that chill anymore. Instead, they make me bored and a tad irritated. Alpha Girl unfortunately did not give me that chill I was looking for. The art style is unique in its own way and I like that, but I couldn’t help but noticed how some things look like it was photoshopped into the comic. Was that suppose to be on purpose? Not sure but all I can say is that while I  it threw me off a bit.
alphagirl01_p6

The story started off good, but as I read further along it started to drag on. The humor was pretty cheesy, but I’m sure others will like it. The backstories of the main characters are interesting and makes me want to know more about them. So if you’re not tired of reading about the apocalyptic world then I suggest you pick up Alpha Girl.

Alpha Girl gets a 4 out of 5

+ Story has a fairly strong start to it

+ Original artwork (for the most part)

+ I did enjoy the backstories and made the main characters entertaining

– Humor could have been better

– Still missing that spark that puts it over the top

Get your copy of Alpha Girl now!

Genisys, Can mankind win?

Terminator-Genisys

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance against Skynet, sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect his mother, Sarah (Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator assassin, an unexpected turn of events creates an altered timeline. Instead of a scared waitress, Sarah is a skilled fighter and has a Terminator guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) by her side. Faced with unlikely allies and dangerous new enemies, Reese sets out on an unexpected new mission: reset the future.

Terminator-Genisys-40

Terminator

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Terminator Salvation

In these previous movies we had witnessed Skynet takeover and go back in time to kill Sarah and John Connor. And so far humans have the upper hand because of John Connor and Skynet knows it.

Taking a new direction, machine decides to do the unthinkable….turn John Connor into a machine. Well sorta, he’s not machine and he’s not human. He’s more.

Guardian-Terminator-734x310Verdict: Terminator Genisys is a very entertaining movie that does better than the last two movies…in my opinion anyway. Now don’t get me wrong. The movie was good, but I felt that the film was lacking something and just repeating the previous films with new machines.

(Spoiler alert!!!) Hopefully the next one goes outside the box, but not so far outside to where everything is completely different and off subject… yes you read right, there is going to be a sixth Terminator! At the end of the credits they show that Skynet has been destroyed but under the rubble, deep down in the ground lies the core of Skynet. Alive and angry.

Terminator Genisys gets a 3 out of 5

+ Does a solid job on the entertainment front

+ Does have improvements compared to the previous two Terminator films

– The movie is still formulaic and doesn’t provide anything new that the previous one’s didn’t

Terminator Genisys is in theaters now

larger-15-AMD-RadeonR9FuryX-GraphicsCard1

The show may not seem as exciting as the shows for the consoles but I can honestly say for PC gaming, their first show was quite good. From new and better PC hardware, new games, and 16205235562366-t300x200cool expansion packs.

In true PC gaming fashion, the show wasn’t just about games. AMD’s CEO Lisa Su revealed their new upcoming hardware. She talked about the R9 Fury X (above) and R9 Nano graphics card (left), and their dual-GPU Fiji. If you want to know more, you can watch the show.

Now to introduce the games!

total_war_warhammer.0.0

The E3 PC Gaming Show had presented some very interesting games. The long list included; Star Citizen 2, Total War: Warhammer, Fable Legends, Gigantic, American Truck Simulator, EVE: Valkyrie, Ion, Strafe, Pillars of Eternity: White March, Hitman, Strafe, Beyond Eyes, Dirty Bomb, Tacoma, Soma, Take On Mars, Project BlueStreak, Enter The Gungeon, Rising Storm 2, Planet Coaster: Simulation Evolved, Heros of the Storm, and Guild Wars 2 expansion.

Microsoft also chimed in to announce that Killer Instinct would also be available to the PC and after that the crowd went crazy (in a good way of course). Another console game that would be making it to PC is (drumroll)…Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

Now I have a question for all of you PC gamers…What did you think about the E3 PC Gaming Show?

My Top 5 Games at E3!

FIFA-16-To-Be-Announced-In-June-2015-At-E3

Hey everyone Kiara Starr here! E3 2015 was really great this year, wasn’t it? Microsoft really won my vote this year and I hardly play anything that Microsoft offers, surprising I know! There was some disappointment and awkward moments but that was overlooked with awesome upcoming games. My list is pretty long so I’m just going to break it down to my top 5 (in no particular order).

Jurassic World: More Teeth is Very Deadly

jworld-banner-44Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus Rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinosaurs to run all over the place. Now, it’s up to a former military man and animal expert (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault.

Brothers Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) Mitchell go to visit their aunt Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the park’s operations manager, but all she cares about is work to care for them. Instead leaves them with her assistant, Zara (Katie McGrath) . Unfortunately, she doesn’t do much to care for them at all. Now, the neglect of children is bad, but of course the movie isn’t about that. This is about deadly dinosaurs that should never have been genetically made in the first place.

maxresdefault (4)Jurassic’s World scientists decide it’s a good idea to create a new dinosaur called the Indominus Rex. Sounds deadly right? Well… you have no idea. These idiots mix the DNA of Jurassic’s most deadliest predators, T-Rex and Velociraptor. Like WHY??!! When your boss says more teeth and screen-shot-2015-03-13-at-11-39-05-jurassic-world-raptor-squad-chris-pratt-t-rex-who-can-stop-indominus-rex-png-301401scary he didn’t mean a deadly weapon that you can’t take down when it gets out of control. Don’t worry I’m not going to give away anymore, go see it because it’s that amazing.

What I really love about this movie is how they showed the original park in a scene (very small, but very cool) and the theme music, It gave me so much chills. It just make me happy that they didn’t change a lot of things and made for an all too familiar feel to the movie. Much credit to Director Colin Trevorrow. It was a huge nostalgia trip!!

This film is amazing. The only issue is that it will never beat the original Jurassic Park movie (but that doesn’t have to be all bad). Jurassic World had its own uniqueness that cannot be understated and it blew my mind! It is a must-see movie for everyone, so get out there and go see it. Oh, and remember… More teeth is more deadly!

Jurassic World gets a 5 out of 5

+ The theme music and the look at the original park was so great

+ The Indominus Rex is next level in terms of brutality (and intelligence)

+ Still has a unique and somewhat original approach that allows the movie to stand on it’s own

Insidious Chapter 3: Get Lost in The Further

Insidious-Chapter-3-e1426542331619

When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise’s tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further — where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls. Did I mention that Elise is a total boss in this film?

This chilling prequel did not disappoint me one bit, if anything it made me very scared. Its been insidious-3-shadowyone week and I still check the dark corners before bed! None of the jump scares were false, they each lead to something terrifying.

Personally I was hoping that this 3rd chapter would continue from chapter 2 where Elise saw something terrifying behind Allison (see Chapter 2), how come they didn’t show it? Is there going to be an Insidious Chapter 4? I wish there was more to the story because the potential was there to polish it up, but hey who knows? All I know is that It’s not over (horror movie franchises rarely are).

Insidious-3-Story-and-Character-DetailsVerdict: The scares were good, but I also felt like there could’ve been more to the story. The movie was leaning too much on the jump scare and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing (in fact, it is the staple of any horror movie), it shouldn’t be the only thing that carries the entertainment value of the movie. Still, it is a good time at the movies so if you want to be scared go see this film!

Insidious: Chapter 3 gets a 4 out of 5

+ It… Is… Scary

+ Elise is a great character in the movie

+ Although it isn’t a sequel, the movie left the door open for more potential films

– Could have fleshed out the story a bit more

Insidious: Chapter 3 is in theaters now

Wayward! Have You Guys Heard?!

Wayward01_CoverB

Have you checked out Wayward yet? You should!

Rori Lane is trying to start a new life when she reunites with her mother in Japan, but ancient creatures lurking in the shadows of Tokyo sense something hidden deep within her. The creatures threaten everything she holds dear. Can Rori unlock the secrets of her power before it’s too late?

wayward

Jim Zub (Skullkickers, Samurai Jack), Steve Cummings (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot), and John Rauch (Invincible) team up to create an all-new Image supernatural spectacle that combines the camaraderie and emotion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the action and mystery of Hellboy. The colors are bright and bold which works extremely well with the artwork and the story as a whole. The design of the characters is anime-esque and makes for a familiar look. The attention to detail in all departments cannot be understated and makes the book visually stunning.

Verdict: Jim Zub and Steve Cummings Wayward gets a strong start with a spunky young protagonist, incredibly meticulous artwork, and phenomenal coloring. This comic is so highly recommended that I don’t want to spoil it for you by telling you what goes on in this series. Do yourselves a favor and head to the nearest comic book store (or bookstore) and pick up a copy. Seriously, it’s worth it.

Wayward gets a 5 out of 5
