When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise’s tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further — where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls. Did I mention that Elise is a total boss in this film?
This chilling prequel did not disappoint me one bit, if anything it made me very scared. Its been one week and I still check the dark corners before bed! None of the jump scares were false, they each lead to something terrifying.
Personally I was hoping that this 3rd chapter would continue from chapter 2 where Elise saw something terrifying behind Allison (see Chapter 2), how come they didn’t show it? Is there going to be an Insidious Chapter 4? I wish there was more to the story because the potential was there to polish it up, but hey who knows? All I know is that It’s not over (horror movie franchises rarely are).
Verdict: The scares were good, but I also felt like there could’ve been more to the story. The movie was leaning too much on the jump scare and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing (in fact, it is the staple of any horror movie), it shouldn’t be the only thing that carries the entertainment value of the movie. Still, it is a good time at the movies so if you want to be scared go see this film!
Insidious: Chapter 3 gets a 4 out of 5
+ It… Is… Scary
+ Elise is a great character in the movie
+ Although it isn’t a sequel, the movie left the door open for more potential films
– Could have fleshed out the story a bit more
Insidious: Chapter 3 is in theaters now
