Toho’s New Godzilla Film Finds New Directors

The King of Monsters was revived by Toho early last year.  It was clear they wanted to do right by the franchise and give it the best chance at success. With that in mind they’ve penned Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi to co-direct what will be the first Godzilla film in 12 years.

Both directors have quite the résumé as Anno was the director for Neon Genesis Evangelion, with Higuchi’s most recent project being the Attack on Titan live-action movie. They also have a track record of working together when they worked on Studio Ghibli’s live-action short Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo. Anno will be the one to do the writing, while job of handling the SFX will be handed to Higuchi.

There have been 28 Godzilla movies produced under Toho since 1954 with the most recent being Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004. It would stand to reason that the studio would want to make sure this new film is a success, not just for themselves but for the fans as well. These sentiments were echoed by Toho in a statement that read “Ever since Hollywood announced that ‘Godzilla’ was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew,”. It also said “If we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla.”

With the confidence of the studio and the comradery between the two directors, the film should be in good hands. To add to the news, a picture (seen above) accompanied the announcement, which is said to represent the tallest Godzilla yet. It’s listed as standing over 108 meters (this is the 2014 version of course) and that is definitely something to behold. No official release date is set for the film, however shooting starts in the summer and the plan is to aim for a fall date in 2016.
